A good mental trick you can play to reduce self-consciousness is to concentrate your interest on the girl and tune-out any awareness of other people. This is sometimes called tunnel vision. If you are a photographer you will understand that this is like using a zoom lens. You zoom into a telephoto view of the girl and cut all the other people out of the picture.
A reverse of this is to relax your interest completely so that the whole locality around you is seen as from a long way off, thus lacking detail. You are not allowing yourself to pay attention to anyone thing in your surroundings. In the photographic analogy you are zooming from telephoto to extreme wide angle. You can then let your attention alternate periodically between telephoto and wide angle, but never stopping for a normal angle view which would bring surrounding people into your field of interest. This whole concept may be too abstract for some readers to find useful. If so, I apologize and suggest you just skip it, but I think some readers will gain something from it.
